Buick Verano Earns IIHS 2012 Top Safety Pick

Brand's 2012 lineup earns Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's designation

Oshawa, Ontario (December 19, 2011)- The all-new Buick Verano, with its 10 standard air bags, is an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Top Safety Pick for 2012, and completes a sweep of Buick cars and crossovers earning the designation.

General Motors is among industry leaders with a total of 14 IIHS 2012 Top Safety Picks, including 13 models that previously qualified for the 2011 award and were carried over to 2012 because their structure is substantially the same as the institute tested for 2011.

"GM set a goal that every new product would be designed to meet or exceed the third-party metrics that IIHS and others use to communicate crash worthiness to consumers," said Gay Kent, GM executive director of Vehicle Safety. "We are now seeing the results from that commitment."

In addition to the Buick LaCrosse, Regal and Enclave, carryover winners included the 2012 Chevrolet Cruze, Sonic, Volt, Equinox, Malibu and Traverse; the Cadillac CTS (sedan) and SRX, and GMC Terrain and Acadia.

The IIHS tests vehicles to determine how well they protect occupants in front and side crash tests, in rollovers via a roof strength test, and simulated rear impacts to evaluate seat and head restraints for protection against neck injuries. The Verano achieved a "good" score in all four types of tests performed and has standard electronic stability control, which the IIHS requires for Top Safety Pick designation.

The Verano is designed to help drivers avoid crashes, while protecting occupants in the event a crash occurs. Standard safety features include:

Ten air bags: Driver and front passenger dual-stage frontal and seat-mounted side pelvic/thorax air bags; rear outboard seat-mounted side-impact airbags; head curtain side air bags with rollover protection that cover front and outboard rear seating rows; driver and front passenger knee air bags.

Rollover sensors which can activate the head curtain side air bags if sensors determine an imminent rollover. In a rollover, the air bags stay inflated longer to provide increased occupant protection.

StabiliTrak electronic stability control helps the driver maintain control by comparing the path being steered by the driver with the actual response and, when necessary, applying the brakes or adjusting the throttle or a combination of both.

Disc brakes with ABS to provide sure stops and full-function traction control to make the most of available traction in adverse weather conditions.

Front safety belt pretensioners to reduce forward movement and load-limiting retractors to help manage forces during a collision

Collapsible pedal system which allows the pedals to detach during a crash to reduce the risk of leg or ankle injuries.

OnStar, which features the Automatic Crash Response System that uses GPS and cellular phone technology to automatically call for help in the event of a crash that deploys the air bags.

Strong body structure to absorb crash energy and provide a protective "safety cage" around occupants. More than 60 percent of the body structure is composed of advanced steels.

"Safety is a top priority in Buick's product renaissance as evidenced by earning these accolades from IIHS on every model," Kent said. "Our customers can have confidence in the safety performance of every Buick for sale today."

Unexpected Problems or: Is that supposed to be on fire?

This is the last of the four part article on winter driving by our very own Aleks in customer service. We hope you enjoyed the articles - you can see them all in order here

If something goes wrong and you get stuck: stay with your vehicle. It's very easy to wander off and get lost in a blizzard. If you are stranded and you've left your vehicle, there's a chance emergency personnel will miss you, and you won't be rescued. Your vehicle provides shelter, and if you have it set up correctly, it can be downright comfortable. Assuming someone knows where you are, just stick with it. You can run your vehicle for short periods so long as you have gas to help warm up, just make sure you dig out well around the tail pipe or you will gas yourself with carbon monoxide.

Know how to change a tire, check your oil, change fluids etc. It helps to have a roadside assistance package. These are usually available both through your manufacturer and through CAA/AAA. Your new GM vehicle has it available for 5 years, 160,000 kms from when it was purchased, and it is also a feature of OnStar (You DO have OnStar right?) Keep a fire extinguisher and first aid kit in your vehicle. If you're not already trained in it's use, get trained in how to use a first aid kit.

Prior to travelling in winter, Watch the weather report. This goes anytime you're taking a long trip or driving in isolated areas. You could be only 10 minutes outside of town, but if you're on an old barely used country road in a bad storm, no one is kileky to find you.

Delay trips if needed, especially when bad weather is expected. If you must leave, let someone know your planned route, destination and estimated time of arrival. Call and check in.

Stay home.

Really.

If don't really have to go out, don't. Even if you know what you're doing when it comes to driving in winter conditions, not everyone else does. Don'ttempt fate: Any idiot can take you out at any time on the road. Don't' give them that chance.

Driving in Snow/Ice or: Wheeeeee!!!

Driving basics

-clear the ice and snow off your windows, mirrors and lights. Don't get lazy. These areas severely affect visibility. I do however do things the slightly lazier way. I have remote start on my vehicle, so I pre-heat it before going out. That lets the ice just brush off the windshields. It's amazing. If you have the luxury of heated side view mirrors, awesome. I don't, so I make sure to scrape them off every time. Same goes with head and tail lights.

-Lights: On the topic of lights, turn them on. I keep my headlights on all winter. Anytime I'm driving I turn them on. Visibility helps.

-4x4: A good 4x4 with high clearance will get you moving through snow where many smaller vehicles will get stuck. 4x4 does not make you invincible. It will get you moving just fine, but it does not help you stop. Decent brakes and good winter tires help you stop. Don't drive like an idiot just because you have 4x4.

-Low gear: Putting an automatic transmission vehicle into low/first gear will give you more torque and more traction at low speeds and may help you get moving. It not as good as 4x4, but it helps.

-Ice: In winter conditions, bridges, overpasses, on ramps, and dips freeze early. Also be careful on seldom used roads. These are the places where ice will develop. You can't' always see it.

-Speed: Accelerate slowly. Drive slower. Leave some following distance. Everything will take more time in snowy conditions so plan accordingly. In summer I am a 3 minute drive from work. In winter I allow 15.

-Brakes: ABS is helpful in that it prevents your brakes from locking up.

-Plows: None shall pass! When it comes to snow plows and salt trucks, just give them a wide berth. If you're behind them, stay well behind. If you're in front, your best bet is to get out of their way. Never try and pass a snow plow. They probably can't' see you.

-Music: Keep your radio down to hear emergency vehicles. Get out of their way. Your dubstep "My Little Pony" remix may be awesome, but it's no good to you if you get in a crash.

Getting stuck in snow and ice:

This usually happens when parked, but can happen at other times.

1. Spinning your wheels: Don't' do it. Rarely will brute force get you out of snow, it will just dig you deeper. Turn your wheels side to side to force any snow away from them, then lightly give it some gas to ease your way out. If your tires don't' spin at all, you may have electronic traction control on. Read your owners manual about this.

2. Digging: If this does not work, grab your handy folding snow shovel and dig out the snow in front of your tires. Try again. If this does not work you can then try some of the kitty litter, sand or road salt you have in the trunk poured in front of your tires to give you some grip. I've seen people have success with a piece of plywood too. You could try a blanket or tarp, but it will probably end up wadded under your tires and destroyed.

3. Rock and roll. You might wish to try rocking the vehicle. (Check your manual first - some vehicles can sustain transmission damage from shifting in this manner.) Shift from reverse, give it some gas, then shift to forward and hit it again, repeat as necessary to rock your car out of the snow. Don't do this unless you're confident in your ability to do it without screwing up your car. It can work, but it can also cause big damage and destroy your transmission if you do it wrong.

Use these tips and tricks at your own risk.Obviously the best thing to do is to get proper winter driver training.

Winter Emergency Kits or: Always Be Prepared!

This has been covered fairly well all over the internet, but I will comment a little on what you should have and why.

What you may want to include in your kit.

-Blankets. With an s. Keep several blankets in your vehicle. Extra layers will help keep you warm. One can get wet. You may have a passenger. You might need to use one to get traction. There are a million reasons to have more than one blanket.

-Flashlight. I keep 2 LED headlamps just wrapped around the head rests in my car. It's a great place to stash them and out of the way. Flashlights are useful for light and for signalling in an emergency.

-Food, Water. Do I need to explain? I keep a couple of MRE's, as well as a1 gallon jug and a few 500ml bottles that I drink and replace regularly.

-Sand, Salt or ballast: This adds extra weight to the rear end of your vehicle for traction, as well as gives you a way to get traction if you're ever stuck on ice (By pouring it down) I've used all different types, and now have settled on a 25 pound bag of road salt. Your mileage may vary.

-Shovel: A folding snow shovel might dig you out. A folding camping shovel is almost useless, but better than nothing. Trust me from experience.

-Jumper cables: Should have these anyway, but in winter batteries die more often. I've taken to carrying a battery jumper in my trunk in the winter.

-Warm clothes: This should also be self explanatory. Keep extra warm clothes in your vehicle. You should be wearing some anyway, but extra clothes are good for you or your passengers. You will want clothes suitable for getting outside in the snow and working to dig out your car. Snowpants, waterproof jacket, gloves, hat. An extra pair of waterproof boots if you're not wearing some already, and extra socks are good. If you don't normally wear thermal underwear, some of those are good too.

-Ice scraper: Up here every vehicle has a plastic ice scraper/snow brush. If you have risk of snow, get one.

-Flares: A few emergency flares, or even the emergency LED beacons are good to have, just in case.

-Candles, fire. Small metal tin: A candle can give you light at night if stranded. It can provide some heat, and with a small metal tin or cup, you can melt snow. I use a standard US army mess kit in my trunk.

-Cell Phone: Always carry one. If you like, carry a deactivated one with charger that can only be used to call 911. If you are out driving around in the winter, you should have a cell phone with car charger. Period.

- GM's Onstar System: This is a great thing to have. It acts as a built in emergency cell phone in your vehicle that not only lets you contact help, but will contact it automatically for you in event of an accident. I've had customers who were Firefighters and Paramedics who have seen how it works from the other end, and that's what convinced them to buy my product. It may come with a subscription fee, but I find it well worth the money.

We've all seen this come up a few times over the years. I figured I'd write a guide to driving and surviving in snowy conditions. For those of us who have live in snowy climates for years, this should all be pretty routine, but it may be helpful to someone unfamiliar with handling snowy conditions. I speak from my experience in the Car business at the dealership level, and also from my experience as a Canadian.
This guide will come in 4 parts.

Part 1: Preparing for Winter or: What the heck is all this white stuff?

Up here in Canada, each year starting anywhere from early October to the middle of November, it starts to get cold. Often really cold. We get snow, slush, ice, rain, freezing temperatures, blizzards and occasionally attacks by The Wendigo. The first 6 are easy to deal with because we expect them, and know they are coming. This gives us the option of preparing for them in
advance. When it comes to your vehicle, there are a few things you should do. These should be done normally, but are doubly important in winter.
Winterize your vehicle

Basics
-Tires: Make sure they are inflated to the correct pressure. Inspect them to make sure they have enough tread. Make sure they are not damaged. This is also a good place to discuss winter tires. I get asked all the time if winter tires are worth it. The answer is totally, unequivocally YES. They make a HUGE difference. Gigantic. Not only do they give you the traction you require to get moving, but they help you stop as well. There's even a handy illustrated picture from the government of Ontario that shows it. They really do make a difference, and are well, WELL worth it.

-Fuel: Keep your gas tank full. Yes I know this is a pain. Do it anyway. Top-it off every 2 days or as soon as it hits 3/4 of a tank (Half tank at the BARE minimum) Having a full tanks helps you avoid fuel line freeze and you never know if you will be stranded by a storm. If you are you will be happy you had the gas to stay warm for several extra hours. You also never know when there is going to be an outbreak of Zombies, and you might need to skip town. If you do you'll be happy you had a full tank of gas :-)

-Belts and hoses: Inspect them or have them inspected. They're more likely to fail in the cold.

-Oil change/coolant: They make oil that is suitable for operating at lower temperatures. Same goes for your antifreeze. Purchase the correct product for your area, and use it. Your Falls Chevrolet service advisor or parts guys can point you in the right direction. You will avoid damaging your vehicle and the small extra cost now is far better than thousands of dollars in repairs later.

-Wipers: 1) Make sure you have good, properly working, windshield wipers. 2) Make sure you have good, properly working, windshield wipers. Yes I know I repeated myself. It bears repeating. Many lives have been lost because some poor fool didn't want to spend $12 on a new pair of wipers. When driving in winter conditions, slush spray is a problem. You're on the highway and a truck passes you, it's going to throw slush onto your windshield. If you follow too close to another car, you'll get slushed. You can hit a big puddle and slush yourself. The only answer to this is good windshield wipers, and LOTS of wiper fluid. The value of being able to actually see out your windshield is obvious.

I prefer flat blade wipers because the ice and snow won't build up on them the same way it does on conventional ones. That said, normal ones work well too when you clean the snow off them. So long as they work well (By fully cleaning the window in conjunction with washer fluid) then you're set. Be aware that if you do not fully clean the windshield off with a scraper before using the wipers, the chunks of clinging ice will shred the heck out of your wipers.

GM's small-displacement Ecotec gasoline engines

Oshawa, Ontario (October 12, 2011) - General Motors will develop an all-new global family of small-displacement Ecotec gasoline engines over the next several years that will give customers in markets around the world improved fuel economy, higher quality, better performance and reduced carbon dioxide emissions.

The program could encompass more than 2 million engines per year by the end of the decade.

The new global engine family will comprise a range of three- and four-cylinder engines – in displacements from 1.0L to 1.5L – engineered and manufactured in multiple regions for global use. They will feature lightweight design and advanced technologies such as direct injection, turbocharging and alternative fuel compatibility to provide customers with both efficiency and on-demand performance. The new engine family also will be designed to reduce noise, vibration and harshness, a common trait of smaller engines.

"Our customers around the world agree we need to reduce our dependence on petroleum and reduce vehicle carbon emissions," said Jim Federico, vehicle line executive for GM global small cars and electric vehicles. "We are working aggressively on vehicle electrification and other technologies, but the most immediate progress will come from continually improving the internal combustion engine."

The global engine family consolidation is part of GM's larger product development strategy to reduce engineering and manufacturing complexity and cost while improving competitiveness, efficiency and quality.

For example, to reduce engineering and manufacturing complexity, the engines will be designed and built using a modular approach with interchangeable global components. This also provides more flexibility for global vehicle programs.

Production is expected to begin mid-decade. The engines will be introduced in GM global vehicle programs, across multiple vehicle architectures in various regions, through the end of the decade. Manufacturing locations and production timing will be announced later.

The new engine family is the result of an engineering partnership between GM and the Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp. (SAIC), Shanghai General Motors (SGM) and the Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center (PATAC).

2012 Buick Verano Starts at $22,595

Oshawa, Ontario (Wednesday, October 19, 2011) - The all-new 2012 Buick Verano luxury sedan, which goes on sale later this year, will have a starting price of $22,595 in Canada.

The Verano offers more passenger and cargo volume than the Acura TSX sedan or Lexus IS 250.

"Verano is a great new addition to the Buick lineup," said Marc Comeau, vice president of marketing at GM Canada. "The Verano gives us the opportunity to invite new customers into the Buick family and the ability to foster longtime Buick loyalty."

Verano is Buick's third all-new model in the past three years and the first in the compact luxury segment, delivering the premium features and luxury characteristics that have helped make Buick one of the fastest-growing luxury automotive brands in North America.

The car will be offered in four models, with the up-level, leather edition carrying a suggested retail price of $27,620. All models are powered by a fuel-efficient 2.4L four-cylinder engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission that delivers 180 hp at 6,700 rpm with 171 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,900 rpm.

The Verano's exterior is distinguished by sleek lines, jewel-like blue translucent projector beam headlamps, Buick's signature waterfall grille, and 17-inch multi-spoke, forged alloy, silver-finish wheels, with two premium 18-inch alloy wheel designs available on certain models.

The Verano's seat heaters automatically activate in temperatures below 7 C (45 F) when using the remote start function, along with rear defogger on all models and heated outside mirrors. Verano also features an available heated steering wheel – an option not found on vehicles like the Lexus IS250 or Infiniti G25. Push-button engine start is standard on the up-level model. All other models use a standard key ignition.

The available all-new Buick IntelliLink™ system uses Bluetooth® or USB to connect a driver's smartphone to the touch-screen display radio. Oshawa, Ontario (October 11, 2011) - A version of the all-new, next-generation Colorado midsize pickup will be offered for sale in Canada. The first version of the truck is launching this month in Thailand, followed by launches in more than 60 other markets around the world.

"As the new Chevrolet Colorado is launched in markets around the world, it will generate a lot of excitement," said Marc Comeau, vice president, sales, service and marketing for GM Canada. "With its combination of design, capability and fuel efficiency, the new Colorado will be attractive to Canadian customers.

Product details, timing, pricing and the production location in the United States will be announced later. The current-generation Colorado will be produced in Shreveport, La., through the 2012 model year.

The all-new global Colorado builds on Chevrolet's strong truck DNA and award-winning heritage, and the show truck versions generated worldwide attention at global auto shows in Thailand, Argentina, Australia and Germany. Thailand is the world's largest market for midsize pickup trucks.

In Thailand, the model lineup will include 2WD and 4WD regular, extended-cab and crew cab variants. Gasoline and diesel engines will be available, including new 2.5L and 2.8L turbo-diesel engines that produce broad torque bands for excellent cargo and towing capability.

Engine availability and model configurations for Canadian versions will be announced at a future date.

The new Colorado is based on an all-new midsize truck architecture developed by GM do Brasil within GM's global product development organization. In major markets where the Colorado will be sold, engineers will tailor the truck to meet local needs.

"For example, Chevrolet Colorado Chief Engineer Roberto Rempel and his team lived in Thailand during the Colorado's development," said Brad Merkel, global vehicle line executive. Typically, car manufacturers introduce cutting edge technology and new features in luxury models and gradually filter them down to mainstream vehicles. However, Chevy is introducing hill-hold technology in the all-new Sonic, a sub-compact car starting at $14,495.

Hill-hold technology makes navigating hilly terrain with a manual as effortless as an automatic, allowing drivers to get started without rolling backward or forward.

In a Sonic equipped with hill-hold, a pitch sensor detects the tilt of the body when the car is stopped on a slope and sends a signal to the stability control system. This triggers the electronically controlled brake hardware to keep the wheels clamped for up to two seconds after the driver releases the brake pedal.

"It will retain the braking force that the driver applied with the chassis control system and hold the vehicle in place" said John Buttermore, lead development engineer for the Sonic. "That's long enough for the driver to safely apply the accelerator and let out the clutch for a smooth start, always heading in the right direction."

Hill-hold is like giving Sonic drivers a third foot, enhancing both the safety and the convenience of driving in hilly terrain.

Ride and Handling

Based off Chevrolet's successful and award winning Cruze sedan, already proven to offer excellent ride and handling, Orlando drivers are assured of a safe, yet involving and rewarding drive. The Orlando's well proven set up utilizes McPherson struts for the front suspension and compound crank axle for the rear.

Emulating the successful Chevrolet Cruze, the Orlando's chassis has been tuned to provide the ideal compromise between ride comfort and agility. McPherson struts used for the front suspension use hydraulic bushings which are often found in more expensive vehicles, and provide increased ride isolation for passengers and controlled absorption of variable road surfaces.

The advanced compound crank (torsion beam) system at the rear is used as it offers the perfect compromise between suspension control combined with savings in weight and space. A torsion beam system can also be easily tuned to accommodate the different vehicle and engine weights.

Safety and Security

Orlando's chassis and body structure have also been engineered with high reserves of safety as a key consideration. Sixteen-inch ventilated front disc brakes are fitted across the range, with sixteen-inch solid discs at the rear and with electronic ABS acting on all wheels. All chassis also benefit from electronic brake force distribution, a system which governs the amount of braking at each wheel to ensure the shortest stopping distances, traction control for when road conditions are wet or slippery, electronic stability control and hydraulic brake assist.

Safety for the vehicle's occupants is always of paramount consideration in this vehicle segment, and the Orlando provides a comprehensive list of safety and security features, including: Panic brake assist and cornering brake control, StabiliTrak, traction control, six standard airbags, head restraints for all seating positions, pedal release system, power rear child security door locks, child-view mirror, standard OnStar with six months of Directions and Connections service, and Euro NCAP 5 star rating (one of the top scoring cars in Europe for 2011).

Most of Orlando's body structure is constructed of high strength steel to form an effective passenger safety cage providing protection in the event of a collision to the front, rear and side of the car. Should a collision occur, Orlando's occupants will be protected by six airbags - twin front, side and curtain.

One of the biggest challenges often faced by emergency services when assisting at the scene of an incident is helping the occupants of vehicles when the doors are locked. However, this is not a scenario that Orlando owners will be faced with; Orlando is fitted with crash sensor technology, where the doors unlock automatically on detection of an impact.

Finally, like most Chevrolet vehicles, Orlando is available with OnStar that includes Automatic Crash Response and its latest enhancement, Injury Severity Prediction. This feature helps OnStar advisors alert first responders when a vehicle crash is likely to have caused serious injury to the occupants. With Automatic Crash Response, OnStar uses data from a collection of built-in vehicle sensors that can signal an advisor for help if the vehicle is involved in a moderate to severe frontal, rear or side-impact crash, regardless of whether an air bag deploys.

The Chevrolet Orlando is produced at General Motor's South Korea manufacturing facilities and arrives in Chevrolet dealers across Canada in October 2011.

Interior versatility

While the exterior of the new Chevrolet Orlando is sure to attract plenty of attention, the interior also features many of the latest design cues from Chevrolet such as the Corvette-inspired dual cockpit and ambient blue backlighting to the centre console. The interior has three rows of "theatre style" seating and, despite the sweeping roof-line, designers have succeeded in raising the second and third rows to allow the Orlando's occupants to get an even better view both forwards and to the side without compromising headroom. In fact, headroom in the third row of seats in the Orlando is superior to a number of competitor MPVs.

Numerous seating configurations are possible with either second or third rows folded independently or together to make a completely flat load area. The second row also has a tumble-fold feature for both the left and right-hand outer seats to allow easy access for passengers into and out of the third row. When the time comes to hauling large loads of cargo, Orlando's cargo area is one of the most voluminous in the segment with 1,594 litres available when both rows of seats are folded behind the first row.

Any hard-working family car needs plenty of storage space for all the bits and pieces that collect inside. Like the original concept car, the final production version of the Orlando obliges with a range of compartments of different shapes and sizes and different locations, including two large cup holders in the center console, map and bottle holders integrated into the front and rear doors and a number of individual compartments in the cargo area. However, perhaps the most ingenious is a storage area hidden behind the front fascia of the audio system, within easy reach of the both the driver and passenger. Seen originally on the Orlando concept car, designers have been able to integrate a usefully large area which is revealed by flipping up the face of the audio system, large enough for such items as an MP3 player, sunglasses and wallets. Within the space itself, there is a standard auxiliary jack and optional USB port for MP3 or iPod connectivity, depending on the trim level.

Efficient Ecotec Engine and Six-Speed Transmissions

Just as Orlando is amazingly space efficient, its award-winning 2.4L Ecotec four-cylinder engine is also impressively fuel efficient - in fact, it has an expected best fuel efficiency of any non-hybrid seven-seater on the market. A pair of six-speed transmissions - a six-speed manual and a six-speed automatic - match the standard 2.4L Ecotec direct injected I-4 engine rated at 174 horsepower. The six-speed manual transmission delivers 6.7 L/100 km on the highway and 10.1 L/100 km in the city while the 6-speed automatic delivers 6.9 L/100 km on the highway and 10.6 L/100 km in the city.

Shifts within the automatic transmission are accomplished by applying and disengaging clutches simultaneously, which provides a more direct feel for the driver, compared to "freewheeling" gear change mechanisms. On the road, a wide selection of shift patterns is adapted to the styles and habits of the driver, anticipating when maximum acceleration or maximum efficiency is required. The electronic control also adapts to the prevailing road conditions, reducing gear shifting when climbing or descending and using engine braking assistance during down changes.

The six-speed automatic also features ActiveSelect manual control, which allows sequential driver gear selection via the shift lever. The transmission also has neutral gear disengagement at idle, which reduces vibration and improves fuel efficiency.

OSHAWA - The Cadillac SRX, a fast-rising favourite among midsize luxury crossovers, receives a significant upgrade for the 2012 model year starting in August. A new 308-horsepower 3.6L direct-injected V6 engine gives SRX the most standard power in its class, and includes a driver-selectable ECO Mode for optimal fuel efficiency.

While gaining substantial horsepower, the new LFX engine delivers good fuel efficiency to because of its mass-efficient design and the ECO Mode, which sets revised shift points in the 6-speed HydraMatic automatic transmission to maximize efficiency.

The 2012 SRX carries a standard price of $42,000(MSRP). Other upgrades and changes in the SRX for 2012 include standard Bluetooth on all models, an optional heated steering wheel, a xenon Blue Metallic exterior paint option that will be available in fall 2011, an all-ebony interior option with contrasting stitching, and a new 20-inch wheel finish option.

OSHAWA - Chevrolet confirmed today it will add a diesel variant to the Cruze lineup in North America in calendar year 2013. Diesel versions of the Cruze are currently being sold in Europe. Additional details on the Cruze diesel for North American markets will be released at a later date.

The diesel will bolster the already fuel-efficient Cruze lineup. Cruze Eco with a standard six-speed manual transmission, is the most fuel-efficient gas-powered/non-hybrid vehicle in North America, with a fuel consumption rating of 4.6L/100km on the highway.

Cruze recorded 18,769 sales in Canada during the first six months of 2011, increasing Chevrolet's total share of the compact-car segment from 6.4 percent to 10.8 percent. The success of the Cruze has grown GM Canada's compact car sales 24 percent even as the segment size remains flat year-over-year.

Advanced technology helps luxury sedan deliver no-compromise fuel efficiency, performance

Oshawa, ON - The 2012 Buick LaCrosse with eAssist TM, which is expected to deliver up to 21-percent improvement in fuel efficiency over the current 4-cylinder model, will have an MSRP starting at $35,415.

Although eAssist is the optional powertrain in Canada, a new, more powerful and more efficient version of the direct-injected, E85-capable 3.6L V-6 with variable valve timing, is now standard at no additional cost. The front-wheel-drive 3.6L model is rated at an SAE-certified 303 horsepower (226 kW) - an improvement of 23 hp - and 264 lb.-ft. of torque (358 Nm). The 3.6L engine's new, integrated cylinder head/exhaust manifold design and a composite intake manifold help reduce its weight by more than 20 pounds (9 kg), which increases horsepower without any loss in fuel efficiency. Additional new standard features for 2012 include dual-zone climate control, 17-inch alloy wheels, full-color driver information center, and USB connectivity.

Later in the year, LaCrosse with eAssist will come with standard Buick IntelliLink, which uses Bluetooth or USB to connect the driver's smartphone to a new 8-inch, high-resolution, full-color touch screen display radio. OSHAWA, On - Chevrolet Cruze customers can rest easy knowing the engineers who developed their car packed a wide variety of advanced fuel-saving technologies under the hood.

One of those technologies is deceleration fuel cutoff (DFCO). While the vehicle is decelerating or slowing down, fuel is automatically shut off to the Cruze's advanced Ecotec engine. When the driver accelerates, the fuel automatically begins flowing again and the vehicle accelerates as the driver commands. It's a seamless process that the driver and passengers don't notice.

The benefits: This is an effective technology that helps keep money in a customer's pocket when at the pump.

"The Cruze is packed with fuel-saving technologies," said Kai Loos, the development systems manager for the Cruze's 1.4-litre turbocharged engine. "These types of cost-effective technologies allow Chevrolet to offer customers a vehicle that achieves hybrid-like efficiency without the cost of the hybrid technology."

How it works: DFCO is enabled when the driver's foot is off the accelerator pedal and the vehicle is coasting. Through integration of engine and transmission controls, the engine speed is carefully controlled under these deceleration conditions. Fuel automatically begins flowing back to the engine when the driver accelerates or when the engine speed approaches idle conditions.

This technology is on Cruze models with both automatic and manual transmissions.

Cruze Eco with the standard six-speed manual transmission remains the most fuel-efficient gas-powered/non-hybrid vehicle in North America, with a rating of 4.6L/100km on the highway.

OSHAWA - The 2012 Buick Regal GS, which arrives at dealerships this fall, has been SAE-certified to deliver 270 horsepower (201kW) and 295 lb.-ft. of torque (400Nm) for an estimated 0-96 km/h performance of 6.7 seconds. Regal GS will be built at GM's award-winning Oshawa Assembly Plant.

Regal GS's exclusive Ecotec 2.0L direct-injected turbocharged four-cylinder engine delivers more torque than Acura TSX V-6, Audi A4 S line Sport, Lexus IS 250 and Volvo S60 T5. Torque is the twisting force that gets a vehicle moving and what the driver feels when accelerating.

"The Regal GS 2.0L turbo delivers the highest specific output of any production engine GM has ever offered, and at 135 hp per litre is the most power dense engine ever certified by SAE," said Mike Anderson, Ecotec global chief engineer and program manager. Ecotec 2.0L turbo highlights include direct injection, continuously variable valve timing, forged steel crankshaft, twin scroll design turbocharger and an efficient intercooler system. The peak torque of 295 lb-ft is achieved at a relatively low 2400 rpm. There is 95 per cent of peak torque available between 2300 and 4900 rpm.

The GS's engine is mated to a standard six-speed manual transmission, and gets an estimated fuel consumption rating of 7.1L/100km on the highway. A six-speed automatic transmission will be available later. The entire GS powertrain is covered by a five-year, 160,000-kilometrewarranty.

Further reinforcing Regal GS's performance appeal is its Interactive Drive Control System chassis technology, which delivers enhanced vehicle stability. The driver selects among three operating modes that change the suspension settings, and steering sensitivity through the variable-effort steering system. "GS" mode optimizes the car for dynamic driving, tightening the suspension and steering response. "Standard," or the default mode, is the setting for all-around use. "Sport" mode provides a level of performance between standard and GS modes.

Regal GS also features a four-wheel-independent suspension, with a unique High Performance Strut (HiPerStrut) front suspension design. The HiPerStrut system helps reduce torque steer and maintain negative camber during cornering to keep the all-important tire contact patch on the pavement. The driver experiences improved grip and increased cornering power, along with crisper handling, steering precision and feedback.

The four-link independent rear suspension is designed to minimize unwanted toe and camber effects during spirited driving maneuvers, enhancing vehicle stability and tire grip. Both front and rear dampers incorporate active Computer Damping Control, continuously changing damper characteristics in real time to maintain optimal vehicle ride comfort over varying road surfaces and profiles. More aggressive, performance-oriented damping characteristics can also be selected by the driver when choosing "Sport" or "GS" mode.

Braking power comes from a large diameter four-wheel disc brake system featuring big, four-piston Brembo front calipers for optimal feel and modulation. A standard, four-channel anti-lock brake system is tuned to reduce stopping distances over varied road surfaces and conditions. The Regal GS also features standard StabiliTrak electronic stability control with integrated, full-speed traction control.

Active Fuel Management gives GMC drivers the engine they need when they need it

OSHAWA - It takes a powerful and capable engine to pull a 10,000-pound trailer or carry a nearly 2,000-pound payload, but when cargo is left behind, Active Fuel Management (AFM) helps drivers get more kilometres out of a litre of gas.

AFM enables many of the V8 engines in GMC Sierra pickups and Yukon SUVs to behave like a four-cylinder engine when cruising with light loads while seamlessly unleashing their full muscle whenever needed. Engineers pioneered the concept of variable displacement engines, but the idea really came into its own with the development of modern electronic engine management systems and sequential fuel injection.

Under light load conditions when only a fraction of the available power is needed to keep the vehicle moving, the fuel delivery to four of the eight cylinders is switched off and a solenoid system collapses the valve lifters to reduce the pumping losses and improve fuel efficiency. As soon as the vehicle begins climbing a grade or the driver needs to accelerate to complete a pass, those cylinders are automatically and transparently re-enabled.

On the GMC Sierra and Yukon Hybrid models, engineers used the ability of the sophisticated two-mode system to provide electric drive assist at highway speeds so the 6.0-litre Vortec V8 can be kept in four-cylinder mode longer. Where a standard pickup or SUV might switch back to eight-cylinder mode while ascending a grade, the hybrids use their electric motors to maintain speed and keep four cylinders turned off, helping these trucks to achieve exceptional fuel efficiency of 10.1L/100km in the city and 8.4L/100km on the highway.

With a fuel consumption rating of 13.7L/100km in the city and 9.1L/100km on the highway, the AFM-equipped 2011 GMC Sierra XFE is the most fuel efficient V8-powered, conventional full-size pickup in America. AFM is also currently used on the standard 5.3-L Sierra and Yukons with the 5.3, 6.0 or 6.2-L V8 as well as several Chevrolet pickups and Chevrolet and Cadillac SUVs.

OSHAWA - When the Oshawa built Chevrolet Camaro Convertible sets the pace for the 2011 Indianapolis 500 this Sunday, it will showcase a top built to last a lifetime, operate worry-free and maintain the appearance of its Coupe sibling.

To assure long-term durability, the convertible top underwent extensive testing during development, being opened and closed more than 22,500 times - three times more than would be expected in a typical 10 years of use. Some of those cycles were performed in extreme conditions; temperatures ranging from minus 30deg C to 77deg C and humidity of up to 95 per cent.

"This past winter we even had our engineers driving 80 of these convertibles back and forth to work every day here in Michigan and Ontario," said Al Oppenheiser, Camaro chief engineer. "They had to open and close the top five times each day no matter what the weather was like."

Every Camaro Convertible undergoes a water test as it completes assembly. In addition, vehicles are randomly chosen to undergo an eight-minute water test at the assembly facility in Oshawa and at an identical facility at the GM Proving Ground in Milford, Michigan. Almost 27,255 litres of water are hurled at the car in a hurricane-like downpour at a pace of about 3400 litres per minute.

Addressing another aspect of interior comfort, Camaro Convertible's three-layer top includes an acoustical liner made of rubber sandwiched between an acrylic square weave outer fabric and an inner reinforcing cotton layer. Engineers use a sophisticated human-ear mimicking device called the Aachen Head to measure noise levels. According to recent GM road test data, the Camaro Convertible achieved a better interior quietness acoustical rating than the Ford Mustang in interior quietness.

"For many buyers, a Camaro Convertible can be a collector car, something they might keep for generations. So we made sure the tops would retain their quality for a long, long time," said Oppenheiser. "There is great value in a convertible with the original top." Oppenheiser knows the needs for car collectors well. He personally restored a 1969 Camaro Convertible several years ago.

Consistent with its coupe-like performance dynamics, the Camaro Convertible offers the looks of the Camaro Coupe when the top is up. The five bow roof design provides a smooth, taut and carefully tailored appearance that retains the sleek roofline of the coupe.

Unlike other convertible models in the segment, the Camaro top latches with a single, convenient handle located at the centre of the windshield header. Once the latch is turned to the open position, the push of a single button lowers the windows and activates the top, which completes its cycle in about 20 seconds.

DETROIT - With gasoline topping $4 a gallon (US story of course! - ed.) there are many ways to conserve fuel and save money. The Chevrolet Cruze relies on microprocessors in the brain of the compact car's fuel system to help.

The Electronic Returnless Fuel System on the Cruze increases fuel economy by 2 percent compared to vehicles with a standard fuel system, said Terry Wilton, General Motors' senior manager for fuel system components.

The Cruze Eco model with a manual transmission offers an estimated 42 miles per gallon on the highway, best among all compacts.

"We've combined a lot of technologies on the Cruze to offer customers hybrid-like fuel economy without the cost of the hybrid system," Wilton said.

The microprocessor behind the Electronic Returnless Fuel System electronically manages the delivery of fuel from the fuel tank to the engine. It is controlled by the brain of the Cruze's fuel system – the fuel system/chassis control module. The control module can raise or lower the pressure in the fuel line by speeding up or slowing down the fuel pump. This allows the system to make more efficient decisions on the amount of fuel provided to the engine compared to vehicles with a standard fuel system whose fuel pump runs at full speed all the time.

The system reduces voltage to a point where the pump doesn't deliver excess fuel. The lower fuel pump speed results in less power consumption, which reduces the electrical load on the alternator. That reduces the strain on the engine, resulting in increased fuel economy.

"To a customer, the Electronic Returnless Fuel System technology is seamless," said Wilton. "The driver does not notice the changes to fuel pump speed because engine fueling requirements vary during different vehicle driving conditions."

OSHAWA - With gas prices near or exceeding $1.40 per litre, the efforts of GM engineers to boost fuel efficiency on the Chevrolet Cruze Eco compact are adding up.

GM tire development engineer Chuck Lantz and his team worked with tire manufacturers to produce an industry benchmark tire that boosts Cruze Eco's overall fuel efficiency. The new tire, along with other fuel efficiency enhancements, contributes to the eight per cent improvement of fuel efficiency on the Cruze Eco..

"This tire is way beyond anything in its category," said Lantz. The Cruze Eco tires make use of special polymers built into the tread compound to reduce rolling resistance, which means less energy is required to keep the tire moving.

So what makes the tire unique? Typically, improving one facet of tire performance like rolling resistance requires sacrifices in other areas like traction in snow and stopping distance. Not so with the leading-edge Cruze Eco tires.

"Thanks to the high-tech polymers we used, we were able to create a high-efficiency set of tires without making tradeoffs in other important areas like tire-braking traction and all-weather handling," said Lantz. "As far as the ride goes, these tires are as smooth as any tire on the road today."

The tires represent one of many fuel-saving technologies that help the Cruze Eco obtain best in class highway fuel efficiency of 4.6 L/100km. With a starting suggested price of $19,495, Cruze Eco offers hybrid-like fuel efficiency without the premium price tag. DETROIT - Truck Trend magazine says the GMC Sierra 2500HD and Silverado HD are the "Best in Class 2011 Work Truck" and GMC Yukon and Chevrolet Tahoe are judged "Best in Class 2011 Full-Size SUV."

In its June issue on newsstands Wednesday, Truck Trend picked Sierra and Silverado three-quarter ton trucks over the Ford F-250 and Dodge Ram. Yukon tied with Tahoe, topping the Toyota Sequoia.

Truck Trend lauded the GM heavy duties as pickups "you'll see on construction sites... expected to work hard and take abuse every day." In terms of capability, editors pointed to the Silverado and Sierra RWD regular cab for towing capacity (17,800 pounds) and payload capacity (4,192 pounds).

DETROIT - Chevrolet takes the heavy-duty pickup battle to the test track - and the mountain roads - in "HD to HD," a video series that pits 2011 Silverado HD pickups against the competition in real-world tests of capabilities that matter to real-world truck buyers.

"We wanted to get away from spec-sheet comparisons and show how these trucks perform in the real world," said Rick Spina, global vehicle line executive for full size trucks. "To do so, we engaged an independent company to test the Silverado HD with the Duramax diesel and Allison transmission head-to-head with the competition, and record those tests for everyone to see."

The tests include acceleration, passing, and braking tests, all conducted with a loaded bed, or in some cases, a loaded trailer. Other tests measure the effectiveness of the exhaust brakes on long downgrades and the stiffness of the frames during twist-ditch simulations. Competitors were diesel-powered 2011 Ford Super Duties, and in some tests, 2011 Dodge Ram HDs.

For example, in a zero-to-96 km/hr test of three-quarter ton models with a 1,500-pound load, designed to simulate merging onto a busy freeway, the Silverado 2500HD outpaced the F-250 Super Duty, 7.66 seconds to 8.36 seconds, despite the slight advantage in published horsepower and torque ratings for the Ford.

"We worked hard on the Duramax-Allison combination to deliver torque smoothly throughout the entire power band," said Spina. "That is what gives us class-leading acceleration."

Silverado HD pickups showed a similar advantage in acceleration tests on a 7-percent grade, and in passing tests at both sea level and at 6,000 feet while towing loaded trailers.

The timing of the Web reveal coincides with the April 19 auto show debut of the new Malibu in Shanghai.

The HD streaming is an auto industry first, and represents Chevrolet's effort to globalize important product introductions by revealing the all-new Malibu simultaneously on two continents, on multiple social networking and media sites, and iPad and iPhone personal mobile devices. Standard internet viewing will also be available.

"We are expanding the reach beyond mainstream product introductions typically seen at auto shows. We are using the latest technologies to introduce this all-new, important car for Chevrolet on multiple continents," said Russ Clark, product director at Chevrolet. BANGKOK, Thailand - Chevrolet today revealed the Colorado Show Truck in advance of the Bangkok International Auto Show, where it is making its global public debut. The concept previews the next-generation Colorado midsize pickup truck, which will build on Chevrolet's strong truck DNA and award-winning heritage. The Colorado goes on sale in Thailand later this year.

"Thailand is the world's-largest market for midsize pickups, so this was the perfect location in which to unveil our new Colorado," said Susan Docherty, vice president, GMIO Sales, Marketing and Aftersales. "Trucks have been part of Chevrolet's core for nearly all of its 100-year history. The Colorado reinforces that heritage with expressive design, refinement and uncompromising capability."

The show truck features an extended-cab body atop a high-stance AWD chassis and rides on large, 20-inch wheels and off-road tires. Power comes from an efficient 2.8L turbo-diesel engine, which produces a broad torque band for excellent cargo and towing capability.

"Although this is a show vehicle, the basic proportions and form convey the vision for the next-generation Colorado that we will bring to market," said Brad Merkel, GM's global vehicle line executive. "It reflects a stylized version of the new truck, one that takes into account rugged dependable truck capabilities for commercial use as well as sophisticated refinement for personal-use needs."

While the new Colorado was developed within GM's global product development organization, engineers took careful steps to ensure it would meet local market needs. Roberto Rempel, GM's global vehicle chief engineer, lived in Thailand for several months during the truck's development, immersing himself in the market and observing how the Thai people use their trucks and the road conditions they experience.

Oshawa, Ontario (Monday, January 31, 2011) - The Oshawa Assembly Plant today celebrated the start of regular production of the hotly-anticipated 2011 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible in a ceremony with employees and invited guests.

"This is an exciting new chapter in the ongoing revival of the tremendously popular Chevrolet Camaro," said Kevin Williams, president and managing director of GM of Canada. "The launch of the new convertible opens Camaro design and performance to a new set of enthusiastic customers, while further demonstrating the flexible capabilities of the award-winning Oshawa Assembly Plant."

The Chevrolet Camaro Convertible is the second of three new vehicles being launched in Oshawa since last September, and two new shifts have been added to support this additional production.

"The entire team here at Oshawa Assembly is dedicated to bringing this stunning vehicle to market with outstanding quality," stated Dan Hermer, plant manager at the Oshawa Assembly Plant.

"New product mandates like the Camaro Convertible are testaments to the calibre of the workforce in Oshawa," added Chris Buckley, president of the Canadian Auto Workers Local 222.

Employees were joined by Rick Hendrick, owner of Hendrick Motorsports, to celebrate the milestone. Hendrick, a Camaro enthusiast who purchased the first 2010 Camaro Coupe that rolled off the line, has now also purchased the first Camaro Convertible available for public sale. In both cases, Rick Hendrick acquired the purchase rights through the Barrett-Jackson auction, with all proceeds benefitting local charities.

"I grew up loving the Chevrolet brand, and I've never raced anything else," Hendrick said. "As a Chevy enthusiast, it's been exciting to see the Camaro return as such a world-class, high-performance car. The folks in Oshawa make some of the best products on the road, so the opportunity to meet them and thank them for what they do is a real privilege."

Dale Earnhardt Jr., a driver for Hendrick Motorsports in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, was also present at the celebration and added, "Chevrolet has been a great partner on and off the track, and I'm very happy to be here on this special day. Chevrolet brings fun and functional European MPV to Canada with all-new Orlando

MONTREAL - Chevrolet's newest entrant into the Canadian MPV segment, the Orlando, makes its Canadian debut at the 2011 Montreal International Auto Show. The Orlando was one of the star attractions at the 2010 Paris Motor Show, and the European model is on display in Montreal.

Based on the show car concept first seen at Paris in 2008, the Chevrolet Orlando is a true family vehicle, combining 7-seater practicality and interior flexibility with striking crossover style design.

Chevrolet's new compact MPV eschews the bland designs sometimes seen in the segment, and instead adopts a bolder look with its low roofline and crossover inspired silhouette, while retaining the distinctive and recognizable Chevrolet 'face' depicted by the split radiator grille and bow-tie badge.

The Orlando's low swept roof line is complemented by the muscular, protruding wheel-arches, housing 16or 18 inch wheels.

"We're confident the Orlando brings the great value and fuel efficiency that Chevrolet is known for to the MPV segment, but also something fresh - function with attitude. It's fitting that we would introduce such an important addition to the Chevrolet line-up here in Montreal, given the importance of small, fuel efficient vehicles to this market. While the exterior of the new Orlando is sure to draw plenty of attention, the interior also features the latest design cues from Chevrolet such as the Corvette-inspired dual cockpit and ambient blue centre console backlighting. Orlando offers a theatre style seating arrangement with three rows of seats, along with a generous cargo area and flexiblestorage solutions.

In spite of the sweeping roof-line, designers have succeeded in raising the second and third row of seats, which means Orlando's occupants get an even better view both forwards and to the side. With a wide variety of seating configurations, the Orlando can be quickly transformed into one of the most voluminous vehicles in its class when it comes to cargo capacity.

A multipurpose vehicle like the Orlando requires plenty of interior storage space. Like the Orlando concept car, the Orlando obliges with a range of compartments of different shapes and sizes situated in the center console, front and rear doors, rear cargo area and even the roof.

However, perhaps the most ingenious is a storage area hidden behind front the fascia of the radio, and within easy reach of the both the driver and passenger. Seen originally on the Orlando concept car, designers have been able to integrate a usefully large area which is revealed by flipping up the face of the radio, and large enough for items such as an MP3 player, sunglasses and wallets. On equipped models, you will also find the USB port - ideal for using or re-charging an MP3 player or iPod when on the move.

The Orlando is based on Chevrolet's successful and award winning Cruze sedan, already proven to offer excellent ride and handling. It features Chevrolet's fuel efficient 2.4L direct-injected 4 cylinder engine. It is shared with the award-winning fuel efficient Chevrolet Equinox, with an expected power output of 178hp.

Customers will be able to choose from three trim levels, LS, LT and LTZ. Standard equipment on all models includes power windows, locks, remote keyless entry, StabiliTrak electronic stability control system, and six air-bags, 6-speed manual transmission and 6-speed automatic transmissions are available.

Chevrolet Camaro SS Convertible to Pace Indianapolis 500

DETROIT - A special-edition Chevrolet Camaro Convertible will serve as the official pace car of the 2011 Indianapolis 500. Chevrolet and Indianapolis Motor Speedway officials made the announcement at the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale classic auto auction, where a bidder will have the opportunity to purchase the first of 50 Indianapolis 500 Festival Committee cars.

The 2011 Camaro Convertible is the 22nd Chevrolet chosen to pace "The Greatest Spectacle In Racing®" and the seventh Camaro. Adding to the rich heritage is the fact that 2011 will mark the 100th anniversary of the first Indianapolis 500, as well as the centennial year of Chevrolet.

Chevrolet will donate full proceeds of the auction to the David Foster Foundation, a charity devoted to supporting families with children in need of life-saving organ transplants. David Foster, the 15-time Grammy-winning music producer and songwriter, founded the organization in his native Canada.

The pace car, along with the matching festival cars, features a Summit White exterior accented with orange stripes and door graphics. The interior is trimmed in orange leather, including front seat headrests embossed with the Indy 500 logo, along with white door panels and instrument panel trim. The instrument panel trim features extensions of the orange exterior stripes.

The color combination is similar to the design used on the 1969 Camaro Indy pace car - replicas of which have become among the most popular Camaros in the collector world.

"It's an honor for Chevrolet to pace the 100th anniversary of the Indianapolis 500, especially during this landmark year," said Chris Perry, vice president of Chevrolet marketing. "This is also a great opportunity for us to build on Camaro's strong momentum, while supporting an important charity."

A New Chevrolet Sold Every 7.4 Seconds in 2010

DETROIT - Chevrolet sold 4.26 million vehicles globally in 2010, an average of one every 7.4 seconds. As a result, Chevrolet's share of global vehicle industry sales grew by 0.35 points as the brand accounted for about 5.8 percent of all vehicles sold worldwide in 2010. Of the top five global vehicle brands, only Chevrolet grew its total market share last year.

* November topped that performance with 368,103 vehicles sold, up 27.1 percent over November 2009, making it the best November ever for Chevrolet globally.
* December concluded the year with 416,826 global sales, marking the 15th consecutive monthly increase and best December ever for Chevrolet.

Chevrolet Volt - North American Car of the Year

DETROIT - The Chevrolet Volt has been named the 2011 North American Car of the Year.

The North American Car of the Year is selected by a jury of 49 automotive journalists from Canada and the United States, representing newspapers, magazines, websites, television and radio shows.

For 2011, the Volt garnered more juror votes than the Nissan Leaf or Hyundai Sonata, which were also finalists.

This is the third time Chevrolet has won the North American Car of the Year, and the fourth time for General Motors. Most recently, the Chevrolet Malibu was the 2008 North American Car of the Year.

"It's a great honor to be recognized as the North American Car of the Year," said GM CEO Dan Akerson. "Since development began, we believed the Volt had the potential to transform the automotive industry. Today, the Volt is the first electric vehicle to win the prestigious North American Car of the Year award, and the first vehicle ever to receive the industry's highest automotive, technology, and environmental recognitions."

The North American Car of the Year is the latest in a series of major awards presented to the Volt, which previously was named:

The Volt is an electric vehicle that can operate under a range of weather climates and driving conditions with little concern of being stranded by a depleted battery. The Volt has a total driving range of up to 580 km. For the first 40 to 80 km depending on driving conditions, the Volt can drive gas- and tailpipe-emissions-free using a full charge of electricity stored in its 16-kWh lithium-ion battery. When the Volt's battery runs low, a gas powered engine/generator seamlessly operates to extend the driving range over 500 km on a full tank.

In December, the first Volts were delivered to retail customers in California, Texas, Washington D.C. and New York. The Volt will launch in Canada in the 3rd quarter this year in Toronto, Ottawa, Oshawa, Montreal, Quebec City, Vancouver and Victoria. Due to strong public interest, Volt U.S. production is being raised to 45,000 Volts in 2012 from 30,000.

2011 Chevrolet Cruze Achieves 5-Star Overall Safety Score

All-new model excels under more rigorous government testing system

DETROIT - The 2011 Chevrolet Cruze earned five-star crash test ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), further building on the vehicle's safety record in markets around the world.

The Cruze was tested under NHTSA's revised New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) implemented this fall for the 2011 model year. The rating is based on more rigorous frontal and side crash tests in addition to rollover resistance testing. Under the new system, the three test conditions are combined mathematically into an "Overall Vehicle Score."

The Cruze is the first vehicle tested under the new rating system to achieve five stars in each of the individual crash impact conditions, leading to an overall vehicle score of five stars - the highest rating possible.

"Cruze has achieved five-star crash safety scores everywhere it is rated in the world. This is the direct result of our global engineering team's focused effort," said Jeff Boyer, General Motors' executive director of vehicle safety. The right to purchase one of the first convertibles was recently sold at the Barrett-Jackson auction for $205,000, with all proceeds donated to charity. The 2011 Neiman Marcus Edition (US only) Camaro convertibles, a group of 100 exclusive cars with custom-designed elements and priced at $75,000 each, sold out in only three minutes.

The Camaro convertible delivers great refinement, along with uncompromising, coupe-like driving dynamics. Its enhanced body structure helps prevent cowl or steering wheel shake, for a strong, confident feel in all driving conditions. The top has a smooth, tailored fit, with acoustical foam in the headliner that helps deliver a quiet ride with the top up.

Chevrolet Is Double World Champion!

WTCC Manufacturers' and Drivers' titles conquered with another win and two more podium finishes in Macau.

Chevrolet won today in Macau the Manufacturers' WTCC title, while Yvan Muller was officially declared Drivers' WTCC Champion. This double success, the first of Chevrolet and GM in a FIA-sanctioned world championship, seals a perfect finale to the outstanding campaign of the Cruze throughout the season.

The championships were conquered with bravura, as Rob Huff and Yvan Muller took a double win in Race 1, after a faultless flag-to-flag performance. In Race 2, the Chevrolet duo had to fight hard to pass Farfus, finishing 3rd and 4th, which means that Chevrolet has been on the podium in 21 of the 22 races this year. Unfortunately, this was not enough for Huff to take the runner-up position in the championship, as he finished tied in points with Tarquini, declared vice-champion only on number of wins. Alain Menu had a more difficult week-end but showed again his tremendous team spirit and personal bravery, having to cope with the sad news of his dad's death. The Swiss finished Race 1 in 7th position, after a contact with the wall in lap 1, but could not take advantage from the first row position in Race 2, as a mechanical problem got him stuck on the grid.

As "We are the Champions!" was being sung in the Chevrolet garage after the race, amid accolades, toasts and some tears, the RML team was preparing for a long night of well-deserved celebrations. Once back in Europe, work will resume, with a new challenge in sight: getting the new Cruze 1.6 turbo as competitive as the current race car in 2011.

Chevrolet Volt Named 2011 Green Car of the Year

The 2011 Chevrolet Volt electric car with extended-range capability today was named Green Car Journal's Green Car of the Year. The Volt is the first electric vehicle to win the award.

"This has been a long time coming," said Ron Cogan, editor and publisher of Green Car Journal and editor of GreenCar.com. "The electric vehicles that were test marketed in the 1990s tantalized us, but were without a solid business case. What a difference a decade makes."

The Volt runs purely on electricity for 40 to 80 km's on a single charge before a 1.4-liter gasoline engine/generator seamlessly engages to create electricity to drive the wheels for an additional 500 km's on a full tank of gas. The Volt’s extended-range capability addresses the range anxiety concerns associated with battery-only electric vehicles.

"The Green Car of the Year award validates the Chevrolet team's promise to deliver a practical electric vehicle," said Joel Ewanick, General Motors vice president, U.S. Marketing, who drove a Volt 2,394 miles from Detroit to the Los Angeles International Auto Show, where he accepted the award Thursday. Oshawa Assembly Plant Adds 600 Jobs to Meet Strong Customer Demand for the Chevrolet Equinox

October 18, 2010 (Oshawa, ON) - In order to meet exceptional customer demand, Chevrolet Equinox production will increase yet again with over 600 employees beginning work tonight on a third shift at the Oshawa Assembly Plant. Just weeks after the start of regular production for Equinox in Oshawa, the third shift marks the final stage of the previously announced suite of capacity increases for the Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain, two of North America's fastest-selling vehicles.

"In one-third of the time it would normally take, our teams at Oshawa and CAMI have quickly implemented innovative solutions to satisfy incredible customer demand for these popular vehicles," said Kevin Williams, president and managing director of General Motors of Canada. "The successful implementation of these unique capacity increases reflects the new agility and customer focus that drives every business decision we make."

In keeping with the longstanding reputation for quality and productivity that the award-winning Oshawa Assembly Plant has earned, a portion of the new shift will overlap the preceding shift for the next two weeks. This will ensure that best practices are passed on during third shift ramp-up, leading to the highest-possible quality of vehicle builds.

With outstanding style, fuel efficiency, safety and attention to detail, the Chevrolet Equinox has been one of the hottest compact crossovers on the market this year. Sales for the Equinox have increased over 72 percent in Canada and over 77 percent in the U.S., where more than 85 percent of production is exported.

National Smarter-Car Research Network Established at McMaster University

HAMILTON, ON (October 15, 2010) - The Network on Engineering Complex Software Intensive Systems for Automotive Systems (NECSIS) was announced today by Tony Clement, Minister of Industry, at McMaster Innovation Park. NECSIS is a $16.6-million national research network created to tackle the technological challenges related to the growing complexity of automotive software systems.

"Taking a leadership role in this new software engineering network expands McMaster's contributions to yet another growing area of automotive research, adding to our expertise in hybrid powertrains, material lightweighting, and advanced manufacturing," said Patrick Deane, president and vice-chancellor, McMaster University.

Under this new university-industry R&D collaboration, General Motors of Canada Ltd and IBM Canada are mobilizing leading software engineers at seven Canadian universities and a Montreal research centre. NECSIS also includes the participation of Malina Software Corp, an Ottawa-based consultancy focused on advanced software engineering methods.

"As a leading supporter of collaborative research in Canada, we have helped build a strong automotive innovation network," said Kevin Williams, president and managing director of GM of Canada. "NECSIS is a key initiative as we re-think the automobile and deploy innovative approaches to develop tomorrow's technologies."

"In an era where billions of devices are being interconnected to enable intelligent decisions, the time is right to create and to innovate development processes using real-time navigational capabilities that will help build a smarter car," said Bruce Ross, president, IBM Canada. "Together with our partners, IBM is proud to leverage our Canadian research capabilities to invest and to collaborate in this innovation effort as we collectively advance intelligent transportation in Canada."

NECSIS is led by principal investigator Tom Maibaum, Canada Research Chair in the Foundations of Software Engineering at McMaster University, along with co-principal investigator Joanne Atlee, associate professor at the David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science at the University of Waterloo. Other universities in the network include McGill University, Queen's University, University of British Columbia, University of Toronto, and University of Victoria, as well as Centre de Recherche Informatique de Montréal.

"Computer systems in vehicles are managing more and more operations and increasing in complexity,' said Maibaum. "That adds up to tens of millions of lines of software code that must work flawlessly and seamlessly together, and achieving this is becoming increasingly challenging using current approaches to software development."

Backed by a five-year $10.5 million grant from Automotive Partnership Canada, of which the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) is the lead agency, research by NECSIS will focus on the advancement of an emerging methodology called model driven engineering (MDE). MDE reduces the complexity of developing software by focusing on models and their relationships, reflected in the designs, code and documents that developers work with, enabling them to test and verify models even before the code exists.

"Canada has long led the world in the highly advanced field of model driven engineering," added Bran Selic, President and Founder of Malina Software Corp. "With decades-long expertise in this field, we are extremely pleased and proud to have the opportunity to contribute to this important initiative."

Functions managed by computer systems in today's vehicles include braking, stability, safety and fuel systems; systems to reduce emissions; and systems to protect, entertain and communicate with the driver. Hybrid and all-electric vehicles involve even more complex software based systems.

The network will be based in the new McMaster Automotive Resource Centre (MARC) being developed at McMaster Innovation Park. It is the same facility that will house research initiatives related to new hybrid powertrain and lightweight materials. MARC is being developed as an innovation ecosystem, promoting daily interactions among industry, university and government on market-oriented and industry-driven research.
